With the premiere of Resident Evil 3 Remake, there are few who wonder how to approach the franchise.
Capcom has revitalized its survival horror star saga in recent years. Since the launch of Resident Evil 7, the company has resumed the path of horror games and has redefined some of its classics. After publishing the remake of Resident Evil 2, it is now the turn of the third installment, which will be marketed on April 3, 2020. Since 1996, date of the debut of the first chapter, many different video games have happened, so that Neophytes may feel lost when it comes to approaching the series in its entirety. In what order to play ?, that is the question. We try to solve it in the following paragraphs.
There is no single criterion that answers this question. However, we will be guided by chronology in almost all cases. If so, Resident Evil 0 should be the first on the list, but at the mechanical level it offers some novelties that complicate things a bit, so we prefer to opt for other titles before. Likewise, the events narrated in Resident Evil 3 follow one another before and after what happened in the second chapter. In this case, we opt for the option of playing Resident Evil 2 before. The first game in the series is available in different versions, although it highlights the remake originally made for GameCube. For ease of access, since it came out on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, the revamped version is a highly recommended option. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield must unravel all the mysteries in a mansion outside Raccoon City. Soon you will discover that inside those four walls are waiting for you more than just hungry zombies and complex puzzles.
Resident Evil 2
As in the case of the original remake, there are differences between the PlayStation title and the PS4, Xbox One and PC remake, mainly because the latter is a reimagining of the classic. In any case, the basis of the story is the same. Two characters of very different profile are in a Raccoon City desolate by the zombie pandemic. Claire Redfield, Chris's sister, looks for him everywhere, while Leon S. Kenney begins his career as a policeman at the worst of times. The story continues.
Resident Evil 3
As we said, the third installment is placed chronologically before the narrative in Resident Evil 2, but the story progresses to be beyond that video game. Jill Valentine returns to star in a more action-oriented horror adventure in which he must escape from an invincible enemy, Nemesis. The monster chases her and will try to end her at all costs. The revamped version will add new lines of dialogue and modify other aspects. In addition, it will include an asymmetric multiplayer mode, known as Resident Evil Resistance.
Resident Evil 0
In official chronology, it is the first game in the saga. It stars Rebeca Chambers and Billy Coen. The latter, sentenced to death, is heading to serve his sentence. Even so, an incident with a zombie will change all plans. This delivery continues to make use of the tank control, although it adds important developments, such as the cooperative side. Arguingly, it reveals the origins of everything that happened in Raccoon City with Wesker and Umbrella Corporation.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Claire Redfield continues to look for her brother after entering the police station and in the heart of Raccoon City. The girl infiltrates the headquarters of the Umbrella Corporation in Paris, with the little fortune of being seized by the security team. You will soon realize that your past with zombies has only returned to the present. This delivery, original from Dreamcast, has no remake, but it can be purchased through the different virtual stores.
Resident Evil 4
If Code Veronica kept track of Claire Redfield, Resident Evil 4 does the same with Leon. The former policeman is recruited by the United States with a very specific goal in mind: to save the president's daughter. To do this, he will travel to Andalusia, in Spain, without knowing that he will encounter creatures much smarter than the zombies he has faced so far.
Resident Evil Revelations
Jill Valentine is again the protagonist of this new chapter, a title that has no number, but that does add value to the official canon. It originally came out on Nintendo 3DS with the aim of combining more modern mechanics with some aspects of the classic survival horror. Together with Parker Luciani, he goes to an abandoned ship in the middle of the sea, a ship on which Claire Redfield is supposed to have disappeared.
Resident Evil 5
The fifth installment, already without Shinji Mikami in the team, collects the playable witness of Resident Evil 4 and presents a title very focused on the action. The argument leaves Raccoon City, Spain and other locations behind to take us to Africa, where the biological weapons of Umbrella Corporation continue to expand. We handle Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar in a video game that includes cooperative mode.
Resident Evil Revelations 2
The plot is located between the events narrated in Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6. Claire Refield and her companions celebrate a party when they are captured and sent to a desert island. The woman, like her brother Chris and her partner Leon, has never escaped Umbrella's threat or her legacy. Both she and Moira Burton are waiting for a new struggle for survival. And they go…

It is the title of the most action-oriented franchise. It allows to handle different characters in the different campaigns (Leon S. Kennedy and Helena Harper, Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans, Jake Muller and Sherry Birking, Ada Wong), also with a cooperative option. Although sales responded, Capcom decided to give the game style that it had developed since the fourth installment.
Resident Evil 7
It is set four years after Resident Evil 6. Ethan Winters goes to a strange place abandoned in search of his wife Mine, disappeared years ago and allegedly dead. There is no welcome committee waiting for you, but a horror like no other. Enter the Baker's home and investigate the most visceral horrors. Unlike the rest of the franchise's video games, Resident Evil 7 adopts the first person. It also refocuses its attention on exploration, not forgetting the action sections.
Of course, the Capcom saga has hosted some spin-offs that have not been incorporated into this list, as they are not considered part of the canon. Nor is it within the official story Resident Evil Resistance, the multiplayer mode of Resident Evil 3 Remake. This has been confirmed by Capcom through its producer. The main reason is that there are things that do not fit with the lore of the saga, so they go into contraction.
