KTM’s MotoGP director, Pit Beirer, said the RC16 race unit contains a significant engine flaw that must be examined off‑track.
KTM’s Urgent Engine Investigation Request
During the first half of 2026, KTM has recorded multiple bout failures, the most alarming of which occurred when Alex Márquez clipped the back of Pedro Acosta at Barcelona, forcing Acosta’s RC16 to shut down in a high‑speed split.
Because the MotoGP engine‑freeze homologation forbids any engine opening, Beirer must ask the series for a temporary exception. The request requires that all four competing manufacturers—Ducati, Honda, Yamaha and Aprilia—agree to lift the restriction for KTM.
Crystal Ball of Safety: The Engine Freeze Rule
Manufacturers that are classified as category D seal their engines before the season starts, handing a sealed example to the International Road Racing Authority. Once sealed, a unit may only be opened with the unanimous trust of the Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers’ Association (MSMA). This finality aims to prevent any engine gains during the season and to protect rider safety.
With the current summer recess, Beirer sees an opportunity to dissect the RC16 without compromising the lineup, hoping to resolve the problem with the league’s approval.

After meetings around the Sachsenring, Aprilia became the only factory to consent to the exception. Beirer thanked Fabiano Sterlacchini, technical director, and Massimo Rivola, CEO, for their flexibility.
“Knowing the engine has an unresolved fault, we’ll use the off‑season to investigate,” Beirer told Sky Italia.
Uncertain Roots: Unknown Faults and Manufacturer Stalemates
Unlike Yamaha’s 2020 remedy, where a tooling change was traced to a bad supplier, KTM cannot yet pinpoint the defect. Nevertheless, the series’ regulations limit the number of power units each team may run, heightening pressure on rivals to refuse perceived advantages.
Thus, while Aprilia’s nod is a positive step, the broader industry remains wary of any action that could shift the competitive balance.
Season‑Impact Outlook
Because any investigation will occupy the July–August break, any remediation could delay KTM’s return to full reliability for the upcoming races. As the 2026 championship sharpens, KTM’s ability to resolve the engine problem may become a decisive factor in the overall standings.
