Hidetaka Miyazaki is recognized at the gala as one of the great creators of video games of the last decade. Surprise for FromSoftware.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019. After more than three hours, the gala led by Geoff Keighley has left the latest FromSoftware as the best video game of 2019. The vote, which is due to The vote of dozens of international media has decided that this is the one chosen from among the six candidates.

Because the candidates were many: Control, from Remedy Entertainment; Death Stranding, by Kojima Productions; Resident Evil 2, from Capcom; Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, from Nintendo; Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, from FromSoftware; and The Outer Worlds, by Obsidian Entertainment. The winner has been, however, the title of Hidetaka Miyazaki, who recognizes a career marked by his personal and unique imprint throughout the decade.

I didn't believe it. Miyazaki has recognized when he took the stage that he did not expect to have picked up this award because there were strong competitors. Sekiro is the winner of the desired statuette and closes a prodigious decade where the concept Souls closes, surely, a circle that will take many years to forget.

Only a few titles have won the coveted Game of the Year throughout the history of video games. The event, since it was called The Game Awards at the 2014 gala, has been awarding this award to titles such as Dragon Age: Inquisition, Overwatch or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. One of the questions that many fans ask is how the voting methodology is performed in The Game Awards. This year there are no changes. Once all categories are established, the organization contacts dozens of media – including FreeGameTips – which acts as a jury. Each media sends its votes and, once selected, the most chosen will appear as candidates in each of the categories of the gala. That is, it is not the organization of the Geoff Keighley event who chooses in their opinion what titles should be among the finalists.
