Shigeru Miyamoto on Nintendo games: "We don't only do sequels"

Shigeru Miyamoto on Nintendo games: "We don't only do sequels"

The Japanese creative has granted an interview to Famitsu, where he reflects on the present, future and idiosyncrasy of the Nintendo label.

As the Japanese medium Famitsu promised, his new number was going to arrive at Japanese stores on March 5 with an exclusive report dedicated to the figure of Shigeru Miyamoto; all to celebrate the third anniversary of the current Nintendo platform, Nintendo Switch. While there are no ads or revelations, Super Mario's father, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and company has offered his point of view on different topics.

“We make a new delivery when a new technology appears”

Miyamoto, who received last October the Cultural Person of Merit award in Japan, believes that Nintendo does not only make sequels, when asked about the company's recurrence to offer new iterations of intellectual property with many years to its backs

“(…) Although Super Mario is a series of video games, we don't only do sequels; we make a new delivery when a new technology appears, ”he begins by saying. “For example, one when the Mega ROMs appeared with greater capacity; or another when the processing speed power of the CPU reached 16-bit, ”he continues.

“Once we have identified new ideas and materials that can be made in new hardware, we do it. As a result of putting all that together, I think it is possible to be well valued continuously. ”

Miyamoto and mobile games: opinions that change over time

Miyamoto has also used to offer his point of view on the mobile market, where Nintendo has produced sequels derived from key sagas in the company; Highlights include Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem: Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Mario Kart Tour, among others.

In the past, he went on to say that “games cannot be played on mobile phones” but now he has changed his mind because of the hardware power of these devices and the new business models, especially when a model has been implanted and internalized. They have another alternative: they have to offer free mobile games (under models such as free to play), “no matter how cheap we can sell the games on consoles,” he assumes.
