Sony PlayStation patents a robot to accompany us while we play

The Japanese company applies a technology that will accompany the player while playing and that will react to many of our emotions.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has applied the registration of a technological patent based on a robot designed to accompany video game players. The patent, which does not have to materialize in a physical product to be sold to the public, is described as a robot that would serve as a companion in our games and that would be able to react to our emotions.

The registration, which dates its registration in the US Patent & Trademark Office in the United States this past April 16, is official and would consist of a robot located next to the player of a PlayStation console so that “it is watching the game with the user and feel satisfied or sad ”, just as the budding player would do depending on the circumstances of the game.

As we say, the purpose of this new official patent is somewhat vague and lacking in concreteness, but the objective would be none other than to serve as a mental complement for the PlayStation player and to correspond his emotions, whatever they may be, to provide encouragement or encourage him to continue . In addition, it is mentioned that the robot-player relationship could increase as they spend time together.

That relationship would be established through biological aspects recognized with different devices, although it has not been revealed whether this patent is intended to be linked to the company's next home hardware, PlayStation 5. The console, which will hit stores this Christmas equipped with a new controller, the DualSense, will bring technological innovations such as haptic feedback and light on the sides of the touch panel, as the DualShock 4 already did to facilitate tracking the position of the player with the PlayStation Camera when we used PS VR.

It is worth mentioning, in connection with this patent, that last November Sony inaugurated Sony AI, a new worldwide organization with which they will work in the research and development of artificial intelligence for several projects already in process. This technology will be designed to be used and applied in video games, image and sound, robotics and entertainment. We do not know if Sony AI has any kind of relationship with this new patent.
