Streets of Rage 4: this is how your characters were created

Dotemu presents a video in which they allow us to discover how they created the characters and art of Streets of Rage 4 with reference to the original.

In the latest “behind the scenes” video of the co-developer of Streets of Rage 4, Lizardcube, we can see how the studio is working on the vision of the original games of the franchise in order to create a beat 'em up experience adapted to the current generation. We remember that Streets of Rage 4 will have a physical format version and, to the delight of many fans of the original, will feature the composers of the classic BSO.

The beat 'em up adapted to the current generation

Axel, Blaze and Adam are back after more than 25 years, and although not so much time has passed for them, the original protagonists of Streets of Rage already accumulate a long decade since their last appearance in the universe of Streets of Rage. They are no longer the brave youngsters of Streets of Rage 2, but they have grown up, just like the children who spent hours crushing their Mega Drive controls decades ago.

Of course, it seems that they have aged like a good wine. The pixel art style of the originals has been transported today by Lizardcube, with a style reminiscent of film animation with touches of manga. In the video that you can find above, the artistic and creative director, Ben Fiquet, emphasizes that the studio has not tried to go against the artistic style of the original games, but has tried to take it in a different direction while "continues respecting the style, the colors (and) the characters ".

The respect that the people of Dotemu, Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games have for the Streets of Rage saga is evident when they see this new game on the move. Although it seems a major challenge to present a modernization of the Beat 'Em Up while taking into account the roots of the genre, the study has shown that nothing is impossible and that we will soon be able to enjoy a new installment of the franchise on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
