A massive crash at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca forced a halt to the day’s action when a Porsche Sprint Challenge North America car went airborne at the newly christened Zanardi Corkscrew.
Catastrophic Incident at the Zanardi Corkscrew
During the opening race of the Porsche Sprint Challenge, the driver lost steering control upon approaching the corkscrew turn. The vehicle vaulted clear of the tire pack, slammed violently into the wall, and tore through the fence before tumbling into the surrounding trees multiple times.
Large‑Scale Repairs Delay IndyCar Practice
Extensive damage to the barrier and fencing required a lengthy repair effort. IndyCar practice was postponed by a full hour and ultimately shortened to a 25‑minute session.
Dedication of the Tambor in Honor of Alex Zanardi
The Zanardi Corkscrew was officially dedicated before the event, commemorating the late Alex Zanardi and his memorable 1996 victory‑win at Laguna Seca.
