We review some of this year’s big names as the contenders for our Game of the Year award on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch.
2020 has been an indescribable year in general terms, but when it comes to this little oasis that are video games, it has been a great year of great titles, some expected and others not so much. As is traditional in Meristation, the newsroom is currently casting their votes on their favorite games this year, which we will publish before the end of 2020. But in the meantime, we wanted to do a quick review of the names that sound the most for that award. , with our also traditional video in which the members of the newsroom defend the most notorious candidates.
2020, a year of great games
Reviewing the year, there are three names on paper that would be candidates by raw score, although they are in particular circumstances. On the one hand, everyone who has played it affirms that Half-Life: Alyx is the greatest video game revolution in recent years and the clearest argument that virtual reality as a mass product is something that has to happen to continue evolving as a medium. “Living history of the video game” we concluded in our Reviews; The trade-off is that playing Alyx today and in its best conditions has a prohibitive price and particular space conditions that not everyone can afford.
On the other hand, the version of Cyberpunk 2077 on PC was also awarded in this magazine with the highest score as a prize to set a new bar when it comes to creating open cities, with a scale and density only at the height of the very great characters and stories that Night City hosts. Unfortunately, that launch has been accompanied by unacceptable versions on the console, especially the PS4 and Xbox One base, with very serious bugs and a performance that has led to the unusual decision to temporarily withdraw the game from the PS Store. The third in contention would be Persona 5 Royal, scored with a 10 although conditioned by being an expanded version.
But one thing is the individual score of the games and quite another the residue they have left on the players. It is clear that The Last of Us Part 2, despite being in this magazine “only” a 9.3, is one of the serious candidates this year, just have to see how it swept the The Game Awards gala, with seven awards in different categories, including the game of the year. His other five companions nominated at that gala are also candidates for our award: Doom Eternal, Ghost of Tsushima, Animal Crossing, Hades and Final Fantasy VII remake are among the best of this 2020 without a doubt, both for their quality and for the Parallel elements that have accompanied them these months (Animal Crossing as the great game to give us comfort during confinement, Tsushima with its beautiful visual recreation of the islands that give it its name or Hades as the independent game capable of looking the giants face to face , for example).
The thing is not there, a look at the list of the best rated games of the year reminds us of some of the great titles that we have been able to enjoy this 2020: Spelunky 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, Mafia Definitive Edition, the complete version of the extraordinary Kentucky Route Zero, Wasteland 3, the great return of the classic Beat ’em Up Street of Rage … or the magnificent Yakuza: Like a Dragon and 13 Sentinels that also offer solid candidacies this year.
