The future of Gran Turismo: "4K resolution is enough"; the target is 240p

Polyphony Digital, which is already working on the next installment of the saga, prefers more image rates than 8K resolutions.

The future of the Gran Turismo saga does not go through an unusual resolution today, such as the already confirmed 8K compatibility of PlayStation 5, but by focusing on making the driving experience as fluid and sophisticated as possible, with a figure in mind as an objective: "120 FPS or even 240 FPS," said Kazunori Yamauchi, father of the license, in a meeting with GTPlanet.

The interview, which has taken place at an event held in Australia, has revolved around what will come after Gran Turismo Sport, launched in 2017 for PlayStation 4. The first answer has been clear to the question about the possible 8K: “ I think that, as far as screen resolution is concerned, 4K is enough. ”

The genre of driving, especially if it is simulation or simcade (as the mix between simulation and arcade is known; as Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport), requires the highest possible image rate per second.

“More than the spatial resolution you are talking about, I am more interested in the progress we can make in terms of refresh times. As for frames per second, rather than being at 60 FPS (as GT Sport has stabilized in PS4 Pro) I am more interested in raising it to 120 FPS or even 240 FPS. ” Because, according to him, "is what will change the gaming experience from now on."

What do we know about the next installment of Gran Turismo

We have known for months that the Japanese studio, regardless of the success that Gran Turismo Sport is reaping on PS4 (which adds more than 8 million players after a few starts to be forgotten) through its international competitive scene, is working on the next iteration of the saga; also that Sony is using GT Sport to test the new technological advances of PS5 and the benefits of the new DualShock controller. However, we have no name, release date or even an explicit confirmation that we will have a new installment of Gran Turismo on the occasion of the launch of PlayStation 5 at Christmas 2020.

For Yamauchi, the Gran Turismo saga is like The Beatles for the genre of driving in video games. The saga, which has more than 80 million units sold since its first delivery, now faces a future where its role at the beginning of PS5 can be fundamental to demonstrate what the new generation is and will be capable of.
