The Last of Us Part II: developers impressed with string physics

A clip of Ellie solving a puzzle with a rope gives rise to a debate on Twitter between several developers about the physics of this material.

The technological achievement that Naughty Dog has made with a console with 7 years of life is being praised by developers around the world. After a release not without some controversy, The Last of Us Part 2 is causing all kinds of reactions, positive and negative, as you would expect from a game of this magnitude, to the point that even the small details make people talk. One of those details is string physics, a common tool in some of the game’s puzzles, and which has been the subject of conversation among various developers on Twitter.

Conversation around a rope

This conversation arose as a result of a tweet from a character designer from the Magnopus studio, a visual development studio that, in which he extolled a video where Ellie used a rope, making a little mess of herself with it. In this tweet he said that “I can assure you that this made 15 people cry during development.” The first response was immediate, and came from Notewell Lyons, an independent developer who is a member of the PSR Digital collective, who are currently in charge of updating the Half Life: Decay expansion. “It is making me cry. My main skill is level designer, and I don’t have any of the jobs necessary to even imagine how to do that,” he said.

Another who was also fascinated was Andrea Migliazza, from Avalanche, who stated that they were “tears well used, seeing the result”. For his part, Kurt Margenau, co-director of the game, stated that it was “the result of the work of the incredible physics programmer Jaros Sinecky, based on the work he already did in Uncharted 4”.

Another Naughty Dog member, Maksym Zhuralov, insisted on Sinecky’s merit and said, “We don’t cry, but we do sweat a lot. Our physics programmer Jaroslav did the hardest job. It’s absurdly good.”

This clip, in short, elicited reactions from members of other studios such as Funcom -Conan Exiles-, Electronic Arts or developers with experience in games such as Ori and the Blind Forest, Fortnite or Overwatch.
