For the first time in this generation, Sony had done something that had never been seen before on consoles – a mid-gen upgrade to the PS4 Pro that was significantly stronger than the base model and allowed, among other things, 4K resolution.
As Sony now revealed, the whole project was a test run for the upcoming PS5 cycle, as it is expected that the next generation will be a bit different from the previous ones. Masayasu Ito, Executive Vice President of Hardware Engineering and Operation at Sony Interactive Entertainment], explains:
"While in the past the cycle for a new platform was 7 to 10 years, the rapid development and evolution of the technology is really only a six- to seven-year platform cycle. In this way, we should be able to change the hardware ourselves and try to take technological advances into account. That was the thinking behind it, and the test case for this thinking was the PS4 Pro, which was launched in the middle of the PS4 start cycle. "
Although Sony has not clearly stated the success of the PS4 Pro and just says that the base model continues to be more successful, there is certainly the possibility that eventually there will be a PS5 Pro or at least it will be considered in the back of the mind ,
