Unexpected finish under safety car
The 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone ended under the safety car, a surprising conclusion that left fans in the grandstands booing as the timing screens flashed the mistaken message “Safety Car ending.”
The FIA admitted the glitch was a software fault and vowed the standard procedure had been respected. The championship’s race director adhered to Article B5.13.5, mandating one extra lap after the unlap sequence.
“The ‘lapped cars may now overtake’ signal, as covered by Article B5.13.4c, replies only when the Safety Car returns to the pits after the following lap,” the governing body clarified.
Rulebook enforcement sparks debate
The conclusion rattled those who saw the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Michael Masi’s decision to restart after only five lapped cars was heavily criticised. Some argue this sharply cost fans a dramatic finale.
Mercedes’ team boss, Stoffel Wolff, disagreed with the suggestion that the current procedure was too strict. “A restart would have been more entertaining,” Wolff said, “but the FIA followed the regulations.”
He joked that the 2021 outcome was “more important”, yet praised the correctness of the applied rules.
Drivers weigh in on the safety‑car finish
George Russell echoed the sentiment that stopping the timing of a safety‑car end should mirror timing elsewhere during a race. “We must treat the end of the race the same as any safety‑car period,” Russell asserted.
He added that, though it’s a shame, the procedure prevented a potentially volatile finish, citing the limited number of safety‑car finishes over two decades.
Points, strategy, and the aftermath
The decision to forgo a restart secured Russell’s second place and granted 18 points toward the championship. Mercedes parked their driver on existing tires to preserve position while Ferrari opted to pit Hamilton for fresher compounds.
“We always follow what the sport dictates, not vice‑versa,” Wolff added. “That’s why I’m glad time and laws were honoured.”
