Toto Wolff Won’t Call Kimi Antonelli the F1 Title Favourite

Toto Wolff refuses to call Kimi Antonelli F1 title favourite

Toto Wolff has declined to crown Kimi Antonelli the 2026 Formula 1 title favourite, even after the 19‑year‑old seized a 50‑point advantage at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Antonelli Seizes a 50‑Point Lead

Starting from the back of the grid due to a penalty, Antonelli clawed back to third at the Hungaroring, while Lewis Hamilton dropped to fifth following his own penalty, and George Russell recovered from a shaky launch to finish seventh.

Early Title Calls Are Too Early, Wolff Says

“It’s early and super‑stitious. With 11 races left, a double DNF could erase the cushion,” Wolff told reporters. He highlighted the team’s reliability issues over the first half of the season and stressed the need to maximise every day from Friday to Sunday.

Strategic Engine Penalties as a Damage‑Control Tactic

Mercedes will keep an eye on tracks where a penalty would inflict minimal damage. Lando Norris used a Spa‑Francorchamps engine penalty to avoid grid loss at Hungaroring; Baku and Monza are now flagged as logical targets. “If we decide to take a penalty in Monza, even Baku is a possibility, it could lift pressure off Antonelli,” Wolff added.

Antonelli’s “Champion’s Performance” and Potential for P2

Wolff conceded that without the penalty Antonelli could have challenged for second. “Lewis won the Saturday, but if Antonelli had not been compromised, he might have achieved P2,” he said, acknowledging the driver’s “champion’s drive.” The 19‑year‑old’s father, Marco, will be consulted on any penalty decision.

With reliability still a question mark and a 50‑point bridge to close, Mercedes denies any premature headline. They now set their attention on keeping the power unit intact for the remainder of the season’s 13 races.
