Triple Eight’s Ford Mustang was discovered to run an engine air restrictor one millimetre shorter than the spec, thinning Will Brown’s performance for the whole 2026 campaign.
Undersized restrictor reveals compliance gap
During a routine check after the 7 p.m. Perth Super 440, Jamie Whincup, co‑owner of Triple Eight, announced that car #888 had been fitted with a sub‑standard airflow restrictor. The part, mandated by Supercars for all Ford Mustangs, directly controls executive engine breathing and therefore has a crippling negative on lap times.
The team confirmed that the component was not manufactured in‑house but was supplied by Supercars at the start of the season for all eleven Ford Mustangs. Lack of detection meant the mistake persisted until Whincup’s crew flagged it prior to the Ipswich event.
Supercars admits oversight
In a swift reply, the governing body admitted that the restrictor loaned to Triple Eight in February for launch purposes had measured one millimetre too small. The component remained installed throughout the Perth race and was only identified by T8RE during preparations for the subsequent weekend.
Supercars highlighted that while routine scrutineers check a wide array of components at random, this particular restrictor never fell under inspection. The body pledged to reassess and reinforce its technical and operational protocols to avoid a recurrence.
Brown will race with a new car
Will Brown remains on track in seventh place in the championship, but Triple Eight confirmed it will field a replacement vehicle for the Queensland Raceway round on 21‑23 August. The new chassis will ensure compliance and restore Brown’s competitiveness.
With the season’s competitive rhythm set by this corrective action, all parties will monitor the technical fidelity of the next Mustang on the grid.
