Ubisoft has pulled the plug on its Far Cry spin‑off “Maverick,” redirecting development toward a new open‑world shooter codenamed “Kodiak.”
The decision, reported by Tom Henderson, follows internal doubts that Maverick could rally sufficient confidence from studio leaders. With the recent success of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft’s leadership has shifted to a quality‑over‑quantity philosophy, prompting the cancellation.
Maverick, surfacing in late 2023, had promised the franchise its first extraction shooter experience set against an Alaskan wilderness backdrop. Players would battle rivals, survive harsh weather, and confront hostile wildlife in an intense multiplayer environment.
Building on the legacy of that cancelled effort, Kodiak abandons extraction mechanics to align more closely with classic Far Cry games. The project envisions an expansive open‑world FPS, comparable to Cyberpunk 2077, where player interactions and emergent storytelling take precedence. Ubisoft has confirmed that Kodiak is still several years away from release.
Alongside Kodiak, Ubisoft is refining the mainline Far Cry 7, codenamed “Blackbird.” The title has been described as “impressive,” and it will introduce new multiplayer components to extend existing co‑op play.
Outside gaming, the Far Cry anthology is moving forward on FX, now featuring Steve Buscemi among its cast, while the company continues to expand its media presence.
With multiple titles in the pipeline and crossover projects underway, Ubisoft’s sustained investment signals a promising period for Far Cry enthusiasts.
