Nico Hulkenberg’s 2026 Barcelona GP campaign collapsed on lap 28 when an unexpected hit of gravel at Turn 12 triggered his car’s emergency kill switch.
Deliberate Overtake Turned Into Retirement
The German driver was challenging Liam Lawson for ninth place, but a stray wheel lodged in the gravel strip leaving the exit, compelling the emergency system to cut power. “The gravel pulled the emergency trigger,” Hulkenberg told the paddock, noting the car went flat and disappeared into the pit lane without a single motorised drive.
Lawson, in his Racing Bulls effort, slipped past Hulkenberg and continued an impressive string of points finishes, now five across the opening seven Grands Prix. However, he was unaware of the precise mechanism of Hulkenberg’s departure until after the race, commenting that the incident was “unfortunate,” and that he had no idea it had occurred.
Other Top‑End Failures Deepened the Mishap
The race was further marred by Kimi Antonelli’s engine failure two laps from the finish and a power‑steering breakdown that left Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari stranded in sixth. These incidents stopped two high‑calibre entries from challenging the front‑line, leaving only fleeting chances for points to surface.
Audi’s Point Drought Worsens
Hulkenberg had been poised for Audi’s first points of the opening round, a prospect that now evaporated. With Gabriel Bortoleto’s ninth‑place finish in Melbourne remaining the sole points marker for the German marque, Hulkenberg’s retirement drops the team further behind in an already sparse points ledger.
