Microsoft does not plan to raise the price of Xbox Game Pass. The North American firm, which hopes to further expand the number of devices where this service of more than 100 video games can be enjoyed on demand, qualifies its current business model as “completely sustainable”; which is based on fees from 9.99 euros per month in its standard model or 12.99 euros per month for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (which includes console, PC, streaming and GOLD).

“I’ll be honest: there are developers with some concerns, I have my inbox available and I have conversations with many of those developers asking what our real long-term goals are,” begins Phil Spencer, chief executive officer of Xbox, during a talk at the podcast Dropped Frames. “You know we get questions about ‘hey, is this just some kind of method to secure a bunch of players and then raise the price for them?’ And I guess there is no plan for us to do something like that. We like the value that Game Pass has today and, from a business model point of view, it is completely sustainable as it is, and I mean it, “he says.

Spencer acknowledges that the big question he gets is whether Xbox Game Pass is sustainable with its current business model. If you have more than 120 or 130 games, many of them exclusive, some even with budgets of tens of millions of dollars, how do you pay and how do you pay equally to each title? Is it more profitable to sell the game separately?
“Look, I don’t have a crystal ball that can tell us where the Game Pass is going to be in five years,” explains the manager. “What I can say is that our motivation is that everyone subscribes”, which will increase the volume of monthly income and, therefore, more capital available to make this business model more sustainable.
