Mass Effect screenwriter joins Wizards of the Coast's new studio

Archetype Entertainment will have Drew Karpyshyn as head of the script department.

Drew Karpyshyn is one of the narrative architects of the Mass Effect sagas, but also one of many BioWare veterans who left the company to look for new horizons. The screenwriter, who has worked on titles such as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic or Jade Empire, in addition to writing novels based on video games and other franchises, has joined Archetype Entertainment, a new study by Wizards of the Coast.

The new team is led by another exBioWare, nothing more and nothing less than the creative director and principal designer James Ohlen. The company's mythical titles appear in its curriculum, but also more recent products such as Mass Effect or Star Wars: The Old Republic. Chad Robertson, another of those who said goodbye to the Canadian studio, will join as vice president and general manager, while Karpyshyn will do the same as lead screenwriter in the Austin (Texas) studio.

The only thing that is known about the new IP they are developing is that it will be a science fiction RPG. How could it be otherwise, history will be one of its most powerful sections, although any detail about it is unknown. Nor have mechanics or other data related to the game been revealed.

The reasons for leaving BioWare

“When I started at BioWare, everything was fresh and exciting. It was the dream job, talented people working together in epic video games like Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Mass Effect or Dragon Age. However, as we grew and triumphed, things changed. We became more corporate. We were less able to do what we loved and teams were encouraged to create games based on market Reviews rather than our creative instincts and passions. My dream job was transformed into a simple job, I lost the enthusiasm I had one day, ”he said sincerely in a publication of his official blog”.

The creative states that with Archetype, his passion has returned. “The feeling in the study reminds me of the first years of BioWare. I feel the magic is in the air. And although I can't go deep into concrete details of the project we are working on, we are prepared to generate a lot of enthusiasm in the industry, ”he continues. “With BioWare, I was part of a legacy that will last forever. We created some of the most loved CRPGs of the past two decades. But I really think that in Archetype we have the talent and the opportunity to do something incredible.
