Williams Racing Sues Local Garage Owner for £1M in High-Stakes Legal Battle

Williams Racing is suing a local garage owner for £1million

Williams Racing has filed a High Court complaint demanding the return of a vanished 2001 FW23 chassis.

The Missing Heritage Car

In 2015, the London‑based team lent the rare FW23 to Autotech Performance Ltd for a commercial display, an arrangement that later ended when the garage entered liquidation in summer 2021. When Williams sought to recover the vehicle, the chassis was nowhere to locate.

DJ images linked to Ralf Schumacher’s triumphant 2001 season, during which the car produced three race wins and enabled Juan Pablo Montoya to claim his maiden Formula 1 victory, are synonymous with the FW23’s legacy.

Williams values the machine at approximately £750 000. The missing chassis is alleged to be a fully race‑ready specimen, yet the opposing side argues it was an empty shell, undermining the valuation.

Legal Claims and Counter‑Arguments

Lawyers for the team allege that former Autotech director Peter Thorpe claimed ownership over the car during the liquidation process, removed it from the premises, and never returned it after August 2021.

Thorpe’s defence insists he never asserted personal ownership and is uncertain of the chassis’s fate after the closed date. In addition, the lawyers bring up a debilitating stroke suffered in October 2018 that left Thorpe with “serious cognitive impairment and memory issues,” claiming it absolves him of responsibility.

The High Court case seeks either the car’s immediate physical return or a compensation figure exceeding £1 million, accounting for the loss of the asset and daily rental valuations.

Future Outlook

Williams Racing maintains confidence that the British legal system will resolve the dispute and restore the prized chassis to its collection. The outcome will determine whether the legendary 2001 FW23 returns to the front of the circuit or remains a contested relic.
