Ai Ogura has had urgent operating theatre surgery to treat a fractured thumb sustained during training near Tokyo.
Operation and Recovery Timeline
The orthopaedic procedure, executed by Dr. Xavier Mir in Barcelona, secured the left‑hand fracture with a metal plate. The Trackhouse MotoGP squad will monitor Ogura’s status over the coming weekend before outlining a rehabilitation schedule. At present, there is no definitive assessment of whether he can return in time for the San Marino Grand Prix scheduled for 11‑13 September.
Setback Amid Championship Push
The injury forced Ogura’s withdrawal from this weekend’s Aragon Grand Prix, a decision confirmed on Wednesday after the team speculated his availability for the media day. Previously, the Japanese rider missed the event after a crash during a training session in the short break following Silverstone. The accident caused a broken thumb and prompted doctors to advise him to sit out the Spanish race.
Ogura’s championship position has slipped from second to third, trailing factory Aprilia rider and leader Jorge Martin by 37 points. He had been a close contender before the Silverstone incident. The Trackhouse team announced the surgery in a statement released Thursday, noting that it is still too early to confirm the rider’s fitness for the forthcoming San Marino event.
