Andrea Stella Confesses McLaren’s Bad Decision at Bahrain GP

Andrea Stella concedes McLaren made "incorrect judgment" on Bahrain GP Strategy

Lando Norris slipped from the edge of the Bahrain Grand Prix grid after a tyre misjudgement left him racing from the back within a single lap.

Sepang’s water dilemma and tyre choices

McLaren entered the Bahrain Grand Prix on a medium‑compound slick, assuming the track would dry fast enough for the dry tyres to dominate. Red Bull and Mercedes had deployed softs, banking on rapid grip gains.

On the first lap, the track stayed wet longer than expected, exposing the durability problem of the intermediate tyres that had quickly degraded under the team’s best lacquers. Piastri, assessing his car’s loss of traction, chose to pit for intermediates, cutting losses and reducing damage.

Norris, on the other hand, stayed out, banking on a swift transition to full slick performance. The decision proved costly: the medium slicks failed to generate sufficient grip on the damp asphalt, forcing Norris to labor through the field.

Andrea Stella’s post‑race explanation

Team principal Andrea Stella admitted the choice stemmed from a single miscalculation in the crossover point between intermediates and slicks. “We expected the slick to overtake the inters after a few laps, but it took longer,” Stella said. “It was an incorrect judgment that became the most complex moment of the weekend.”

Stella also highlighted that Piastri’s early pit stop was driven by his own assessment that the intermediates were still viable, whereas Norris’s team encouraged staying on media to wait for fully dry conditions. The two drivers reacted differently: Piastri split immediately, while Norris, the front‑row qualifier, opted to hold out.

Final outcomes and lessons

Despite the mishap, Norris recovered to eighth after Alex Albon’s gearbox issue and the ensuing safety car, finishing ninth overall. Piastri ended the race twenty‑kilometres ahead of his counterpart, showcasing the urgency of an earlier switch.

McLaren’s analysis underscores the criticality of real‑time tyre data and the fine line between risk and reward at Sepang. The Bahrain Grand Prix demonstrates that even a single slip in tyre strategy can swing the race from contention to damage control.
