Bernie Collins explains what Max Verstappen’s Singapore radio glitch says about him

Bernie Collins on what Max Verstappen's Singapore radio failure revealed about him

Max Verstappen conquered the Singapore Grand Prix, performing flawlessly even while only receiving one‑way radio updates.

After taking pole in the sprint race, Verstappen crossed the finish line faster than any rival. The Dutch driver held onto Marcus Ericsson’s advantage, later securing pole for the main event. A brief radio glitch deprived him of any real‑time feedback from his own team.

Engineered by Gianpiero Lambiase, the Red Bull Communications system could broadcast signals to Verstappen but not receive the driver’s replies. Lambiase resorted to concise yes‑or‑no queries, with Verstappen signalling by pressing or not pressing the radio button.

Billieson Collins, former F1 strategist and Sky Sports analyst, commended this process. “When half‑communications happen it is very tricky for teams to confirm whether Max hears them,” Collins said, explaining that the crew had to rethink how to gather data. “He had to manage the race, tire strategy, and race‑pace without external guidance.”

Verstappen’s ability to self‑direct, decipher the track positions, and decide when to push or conserve shows the level of judgment championed by Red Bull’s culture. His race evened the design of the circuit with strategic planning done without verbal cues.
