Valtteri Bottas has seized the opening of the Formula 1 summer shutdown to secure a spot in the UCI Gravel World Championship after finishing fifth in the 131‑km Czech qualifying event.
Gravel World Breakthrough
The 36‑year‑old Finn tackled the Hlinsko course with Olympic cyclist Tiffany Cromwell, clocking 131 km of mixed terrain. He placed 5th in the Men 35‑39 age group, earning the qualification slot for the Gravel World Championship.
In a brief Instagram update, Bottas reflected on the contrast between the team’s paddle‑boat retreats and his own off‑road adventure, highlighting the support he received from fans and the enjoyment of exploring the event alongside Cromwell.
F1 Season Performance
After a full‑time absence in 2025 as Mercedes reserve, Bottas joined the newly formed Cadillac lineup for the 2026 Formula 1 campaign. The American outfit, also featuring former Red Bull star Sergio Perez, currently sits 11th in the constructors’ standings with no points, just one behind Aston Martin.
In the first half of the season, Bottas’s best finish was 13th at the Chinese Grand Prix, while Perez’s top results were 14th at both Barcelona‑Catalunya and the British Grand Prix.
Following the Hungarian Grand Prix DNF, Bottas stressed that the setbacks would make the team “stronger for the future”, praising the crew’s hard work and noting how these experiences serve as learning points.
