Bubba Wallace’s 2026 campaign has taken a dramatic turn, dropping from a second‑place surge to 14th seed as the Chase approaches.
Early Momentum and Record‑Setting Teammates
23XI Racing has already secured seven victories this year, a benchmark for the team, with Tyler Reddick flashing five wins and Corey Heim contributing two. Wallace, the only 23XI driver to reach victory lane in 2025, remains winless in 2026.
After six of the 26 regular‑season races, Wallace hovered near the top of the standings, but a cascade of losses has let him slip to mid‑field. The shifting fortunes reflect a season marked by heartbreak, controversial penalties and frustrating bad luck.
Unpredictable Finishes and Hot‑and‑Cold Trajectory
Through the summer, Wallace recorded a roller‑coaster of outcomes: 32nd, 3rd, 21st, 2nd, 22nd, 6th, 29th and another 6th. These extremes underscore how a fast car can still deliver muddled results.
The inconsistency is a direct consequence of “strict” race conditions, unpredictable traffic interference, and penalties that have cost the team valuable points.
Wallace on the Season’s Rollercoaster
During “The Chase” media day, Wallace noted, “We’ve been in this pattern before, but we’re learning to handle it better.” He added, “Fast cars produce terrible results at times, yet we still believe we could be top seven. If we execute, results will follow.”
He believes the No. 23 group is hungry for success, refusing to settle for the 14th‑seed spot. “We’re not satisfied with our current position,” Wallace said, “and we have the capability to make noise in the final ten weeks.”
Managing the Chase Pressure
Wallace admitted that “the nerves are there, and we’ve worked hard to get here,” stressing the importance of focusing on “base hits” rather than high‑risk swings. He emphasized “keeping the emotions in check” and maintaining an enjoyable mindset amid high intensity.
He also highlighted the speed advantage of their Toyotas, saying, “We’ve known how fast we are for months and will continue to grow that advantage.”
Preparedness for Darlington and Beyond
Looking ahead, Wallace sees Darlington as a pivotal track where “our early-season form can return us to the top.” He remains optimistic, “We’ll get back on the horse and keep riding.”
Despite the misstep, the No. 23 team has the capability and confidence to reassert itself when the Chase concludes. As Wallace maintains, “It’s about one step at a time, performing what we need to finish strong.”
