Call of Duty: Warzone vs Apex Legends downloads: more players in less time

Activision's new free battle royale is sweeping numbers of concurrent players and spectators. Beat the EA and Respawn game.

Call of Duty: Warzone is being the great sensation for the month of March. Activision has unintentionally launched its new free-to-play video game under the battle royale genre in an unprecedented global quarantine situation due to the coronavirus, which will cause concurrent player spikes as there are no school classes. His first days are really impressive, with more than 15 million players in less than a week. But how good are these figures?

We compared Call of Duty: Warzone with what Apex Legends did

We've been looking for data from the Apex Legends debut just over a year ago now. Although the great dominator and true competitor of the aspiring king of the battle royale genre is Fortnite, the context in which it was launched and its gradual growth was so different that it is complex to put their numbers face to face.

With the EA solution it is easier and fairer. Both were launched at the beginning of the year (2019 vs. 2020) and both under the protection of a great publisher. Those 15 million users in less than a week (6 million players in 24 hours), however, are far superior to the already successful Apex Legends, which today has more than 100 million players.

The Respawn Entertainment title took a week to register 25 million players, while the Activision and Infinity Ward title is on track to far exceed those numbers; as long as the growth curve remains the same. In 24 hours, Apex Legends had 2.5 million players; Call of Duty: Warzone did the same with 6 million users.

Whether Call of Duty: Warzone will reach 100 million players is currently somewhat unknown; his rival did it in a year.

Official Apex Legends figures since its launch (February 2019)

  • First 24 hours: 2.5 million players (peak 600,000 concurrent)
  • First 72 hours: 10 million players
  • After its first week: 25 million players (peak of 2 million simultaneous)
  • After its first month: 50 million players
  • Present (more than a year): more than 100 million players
