Four laps from the finish, Albon tried to overtake Sainz on the outside of Turn 1. Sainz, defending on the inside and battling tyre‑pressure, locked his front tyres and slid straight into the track, contacting Albon. When confronted with the penalty, Sainz admitted, “It was a fair penalty. I had a bit of a surprise when I went to defend… I touched the brakes, I locked up and I took Alex with me, which is the worst possible outcome for that race.” He apologized to Albon, stating the incident was unintended.
Albon reflected on the incident’s impact on Williams, arguing that the red‑flagged collision was less severe than a 2018 Azerbaijan clash between former Red Bull drivers. He said, “It was simply on him. I saw him lock up, so I immediately tried to follow him in a straight line. But we made contact.”

Both cars finished the race in fifteenth and sixteenth positions, a place only ahead of Cadillac’s Sergio Perez. The collision cost Williams a brief opportunity to secure points and highlighted the tight struggle at the back of the field.
