Casey Stoner vows to battle for Phillip Island’s return to the MotoGP calendar

Casey Stoner plans to 'fight' for Phillip Island to return to MotoGP schedule

Casey Stoner, former MotoGP champion, has vowed to fight for the return of the Australian Grand Prix to Phillip Island, which the series will drop from its calendar after 2026.

In a recent YouTube interview with ex‑rider Chris Vermeulen, the two‑time world champion expressed that the idea of the event moving to Adelaide’s new street circuit is unsettling. “Phillip Island has always delivered the best racing,” he said. “Saying the track is no longer needed is shocking, and I will work to bring it back.

Stoner, who claimed six consecutive victories at the circuit between 2007 and 2012, admitted the venue could benefit from a minor overhaul. “Some changes are necessary, such as updating pit facilities and refreshing the overall format, but that should not mean abandoning the track entirely,” he added. “The circuit still produces moments of brilliance that fans deserve.”

Legacy and Fervor

Since 1989, Phillip Island has hosted the Australian Grand Prix every year, with the only interruptions being the COVID-19 shutdowns and the brief stint at Eastern Creek during the 1990s. The track’s reputation for relentless racing and its spiritual connection to the event have cemented it in MotoGP lore.

Adelaide’s New Challenge

Motorcycle racing authorities have already secured Adelaide as the 2027 venue, with the new street circuit slated to be added to the official calendar. The decision is widely seen as a sign that Phillip Island’s days as a MotoGP venue are concluding. Stoner’s opposition comes amid similar calls from current riders such as Toprak Razgatlioglu, who urged the inclusion of a return to Turkey’s circuit in the 2024 season.

What’s Next for the Australian GP

With both the Australian and Brazilian Grand Prix being moved or dropped the next few years, the MotoGP calendar is undergoing a steady reshuffle. While the Adelaide street event offers a fresh challenge for teams and riders, Stoner’s campaign highlights the enduring significance of Phillip Island for the sport’s heritage. Should his lobbying succeed, the track may yet rejoin the season’s lineup, redefining the narrative for riders and fans alike.
