Former Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams has warned that George Russell could be hampered by a persistent streak of bad luck, putting his chance at a title in jeopardy.
George Russell Faces Persistent Bad Luck, Raising Championship Concerns
Williams, who championed Russell as the 2026 season’s favourite, admitted to feeling “really sad” at his recent setbacks. She said the driver’s fortunes were thwarted by a car dysfunction during Chinese GP qualifying, a safety‑car interruption in Japan that ruined strategy, and an untimely retirement from the lead in Canada.
Recent Misfortunes Hamper Momentum
While Kimi Antonelli has seized five of the first seven races, Russell’s record shows a pattern of mishaps that appear to go beyond misfortune. He lost the Chinese GP qualifying pace due to vehicle issues, and an unpredictable safety‑car phase in Japan disrupted a plausible points haul. The Canadian incident saw him exit front‑row position under mechanical strain, adding to the cumulative disappointment.
Williams Warns of Luck’s Stickiness
She reflected on past “lottery” moments in Formula 1—rain, safety cars, surprising overtakes—that rarely benefited Williams teams. Williams has observed that this luck did not favour her crew, often leaving rivals to capitalize. “I worry that George… I think he deserves a title,” she said, emphasizing that talent was not the problem but rather a climate of unfortunate timing.

With the season’s outcomes still in flux, the glass of fortune may yet tilt in Russell’s favour, but the current trajectory raises a stark question about luck’s lingering shadow in the pursuit of championship glory.
