Colton Herta has pulled out of both races at the Madrid Formula 2 round after a damaging crash in Friday’s qualifying.
Crash that forced withdrawal
During the new circuit’s qualifying, Herta spun in Turn 19, the car’s rear lost grip and it slamming into both walls. The impact left significant damage to the front, rear and right‑hand side of the chassis. Following the damage and feeling “unwell”, he withdrew from Saturday’s race and again from Sunday’s event, with no further comment about his condition.
Performance context
The former IndyCar star has struggled in Mexico. Across 11 Formula 2 rounds he has only qualified inside the top 10 once, and has earned 26 points for the year—20 of those in the first five meetings. The Madrid weekend was arguably his worst so far; after crashes in Monza, he has been involved in three accidents in his last six sessions.
Team notes
While Herta was sidelined, Hitech teammate Ritomo Miyata finally secured his maiden Formula 2 victory on Saturday after 76 attempts. There, meanwhile, fellow American Ugo Ugochukwu clinched the 2026 Formula 3 title on Sunday.
