Connor Zilisch Accepts Cup Ride at Hendrick Motorsports; He Couldn’t Say No

Connor Zilisch couldn’t say ‘no’ to a Cup ride at Hendrick Motorsports

Connor Zilisch is set to depart Trackhouse Racing for Rick Hendrick’s No.48 Ally‑Chevrolet squad in 2028, after a rookie Cup Series season that saw him finish 34th with a single top‑ten finish.

Career Transition Looms After Challenging Rookie Campaign

Zilisch, 20, has already claimed 11 victories in the O’Reilly Series with JR Motorsports, a partnership tied to Chevrolet. In 2024 he joined Trackhouse Racing, which also added Shane Van Gisbergen to partner with veteran Ross Chastain.

The squad faced financial and competitive headwinds this year, leading the owner, Justin Marks, to reconsider the driver lineup. Zilisch acknowledged the loyalty he feels toward Marks, describing him as a friend and a mentor, yet noted the allure of driving for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hendrick’s Strategic Move Aligns With Ally’s Sponsorship Vision

Rick Hendrick, by way of the prolonged partnership with Ally—an agent of the General Motors Acceptance Corporation—identified Zilisch as a strong fit, citing professionalism and upside. The decision was timed to follow Alex Bowman’s confirmation of his last full‑time Cup season in 2027, making the 2028 seat available.

According to Jeff Gordon, Hendrick’s vice chairman, the “stars pretty much aligned” when Marks gave his blessing, and the contract was announced a year and a half early. Gordon added that Alliance teams routinely coordinate through a competitive alliance, facilitating the move.

On Trackhouse, the Rookie Keeps Working Toward Wins

Despite a sophomore season marked by fierce competition, Zilisch said the team “has a new car, and we’re working hard.” He added, “We see progress, but we’re not where we need to be. We’re going to dig in and figure it out.”

He highlighted the cohesive culture of the team: “We lock arms, stay together, we’re stronger together.” Zilisch also noted that his experience in Rolex 24 and other series has prepared him for the Cup Series, and he expressed confidence that he will continue growing until his departure.

Looking Ahead: Loyalty, Ambition, and Sacrifice

In a sharp balance of ambition and gratitude, Zilisch noted, “I’m very appreciative of Justin and everything he’s done for me. It’s an honor for me to get to race for him and get to know him as a person.” Yet he also said, “When Mr. Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports have an availability and possibility to drive for their NASCAR team, it’s very hard to say no.”

Building on his recent victories and the experience he’s gained, Zilisch remains focused on finishing his Trackhouse chapter on a high note before he steps into the more prominent chassis and resources of Hendrick Motorsports.
