Kimi Antonelli clinched a dramatic triumph at Monza by leaping from 19th on the grid to first place, ending a 60‑year drought for Italian winners at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver’s seventh career victory marked a breakout performance that shocked the paddock at the historic Autodromo Nazionale.
Antonelli became the first Italian to lift the trophy since 1966, a milestone that reverberated across the Italian fan base in Milan.
Generation‑Changing Praise
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard described the race as “up there with the greats,” noting that Antonelli’s command from the back of the grid was a defining moment in his career.
While admiring the drive, Coulthard cautioned against equating the 20‑year‑old rookie with the likes of Hamilton, Verstappen, Senna or Schumacher, arguing that such comparisons should be reserved for the era’s multiple world champions.
Coulthard added that, despite the extraordinary nature of Antonelli’s performance, it should not elevate him into the legacy of those top-tier names until more results follow.

Championship Dynamics Shift
The Monza win propelled Antonelli to the front of the drivers’ standings, holding a 66‑point advantage over team‑mate George Russell.
Lewis Hamilton sits fourth in the fight, 76 points behind Antonelli. Russell remains pitted for a challenging chase while Hamilton’s position in third is underlined by the gap created by the Italian victory.
Antonelli’s victory sensed his capability for more grand prix successes and strengthened his title‑challenging position as the season concludes, while Russell and Hamilton each face steep battles to maintain any chance for the title.
