After an extensive early access phase, Sony and Media Molecule released their innovative creator tool ‘Dreams’ on PlayStation 4 this Friday. Now everyone can explore the “dream universe”, the extensive tools and the story campaign “Arts Dream”.
Dreams is a creative toolset for creating your own content – be it games, levels, objects, music or animations – with almost endless artistic possibilities. These can be shared online in the “dream universe” and experienced, evaluated, played, edited and used by other players for their own projects, which puts the community and their creativity in the immediate focus of Dreams.
Story campaign introduces the tools
In addition to the tools, the numerous playful tutorials and the dream universe, “Arts Dream” is a story campaign that was developed by Media Molecule using only the tools available in the game. This story is about the former jazz musician Art, who dreams of his life, past and present and realizes that he has a lot to make up for with his band mates. The journey takes him through a series of dream-like situations in which players encounter various dazzling fantasy creatures – including D-Bug, a helpful little robot with an electrifying personality, and Francis, a hammer-swinging teddy bear.
PS5 release planned?
Just a few days ago, Media Molecule had said that Dreams had a multi-year plan. This gives reason to hope that Dreams will also be released for PlayStation 5 later, even if it is currently anything but official.
According to creative director Mark Healey, the focus is currently on the PS4 version and hopes to be able to extend the lifespan of the console. Nevertheless, other platforms are seen as “an obvious development”, which is why one can hope at this point.
What is already possible in Dreams is shown by the many creations that have already been developed by the community in the beta and early access phase. These include, for example, the “Pig Detective” adventure series from Germany, which originated in Germany and was awarded the “Dream of the Year” award by users Sebastian (SdeReu) and Lotte (Lotte_Double).
If you want to browse through the dream universe regardless of the game, you can take a look at the different creations at indreams.me or here or follow the latest creations from the community under the hashtag #madeindreams on Twitter and Instagram. The best creations were honored during the Impy Awards and can be viewed in the video from Inside PlayStation or on the Media Molecule blog.
