F1 Eyes 2031 Rule Change: Moving Away from Customer Power Units

F1 could move away from customer power units 2031

From 2031, the FIA may hand a unified V8 power‑unit to all Formula One teams, effectively ending the era of bespoke engines for customer outfits.

FIA’s V8 Engine Proposal

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and Formula One chief Stefano Domenicali have signaled a shift toward naturally aspirated V8s with reduced electric support, aiming to cut cost, weight, and acoustic intensity.

The proposal includes a third‑party supply model whereby teams will receive a factory‑built V8, removing the option for privately manufactured units and thus closing the door on current customer relationships.

Implications for Customer Teams

Presently, Mercedes HPP supplies McLaren, Williams and Alpine; Red Bull Ford Powertrains supplies Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls; Ferrari leases units to Haas and Cadillac; Audi remains an on‑track works outfit alongside Aston Martin, which partners with Honda.

Under the new plan, teams would either assemble their own engines or purchase the standardized V8, ending the customary “customer” formulaar branch.

Manufacturer and Team Reactions

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown has voiced concerns over alliances that blur team identities, citing Red Bull’s dual ownership and Mercedes’ stalled 24 % stake offer to Alpine.

Several manufacturers, including Audi, Ford Powertrains, and Ford Motorsport, have signalled willingness to build the new V8, but none can prepare without formal regulations.

Regulatory Path and Timeline

The current Concorde and power‑unit accords run through the 2030 season, yet the FIA retains the unilateral authority to mandate the V8 formula for 2031.

A supermajority among the six current power‑unit manufacturers could accelerate the transition to 2030; otherwise, the mandatory year remains 2031.

Potential Shift Earlier: 2030 Considerations

Ben Sulayem has expressed openness to advancing the switch one year earlier, noting that the regulation would apply even without unanimous vendor consent.

However, the FIA remains wary of alienating firms it has worked to attract in recent years, favoring broad consensus over unilateral action.

Only by standardising the engine for all teams will the FIA achieve the desired balance of cost, simplicity and competitive parity as Formula One moves toward a purer, lighter style of racing.
