Fernando Alonso has voiced a keen interest in returning to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, saying he would be especially motivated if he could race alongside four‑time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen.
Past Endurance Glory
Alonso already earned a reputation in endurance racing, clinching consecutive victories at the Circuit de la Sarthe in 2018 and 2019 for Toyota and securing the World Endurance Championship title. Despite his successful stint, the Spaniard has never raced in the IndyCar Series again after a brief period, expressing that the series is not on his radar.
Beyond Le Mans: Future Ambitions
During an on‑stage interview in Barcelona, Alonso dismissed the idea of a return to IndyCar and weighed his options within the Hypercar domain. “I’d like to do the Dakar, and I want to win it one day; the challenge itself is what appeals to me,” he said. He also highlighted a desire to achieve a unique “Triple Crown” by winning in Formula 1, endurance racing, and rallying.
Present Struggles: Aston Martin 2026
While Alonso races with Aston Martin, the team faces technical difficulties with its 2026 machinery. After seven rounds, the driver sits 18th with a single point, and teammate Lance Stroll is 22nd. The team remains 10th overall, ahead of only Cadillac, which joined the grid in 2026.
Alonso’s longing to bolt a special chapter into his career could yet bring a historic partnership with Verstappen to Le Mans, and it may also trigger a broader rallying pursuit—setting the stage for a rare triple‑champion quest.
