George Russell converted his pole position into a sprint win at Zandvoort, marking the Mercedes driver’s third Saturday victory on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
Race dynamics and driver performance
The dry Dutch circuit opened with Russell setting the pace from the front. Norris held the second spot, but Kimi Antonelli immediately challenged his teammate, slipping past Piastri on the outside of Turn 1 to claim the rear‑row launch.
Russell expanded a two‑second lead by lap 10 after a push from the team, leaving Lando Norris struggling with rear grip. “I’ve got no rear,” Norris said, yet he managed to retain second place until Charles Leclerc, on softer tyres, overtook Norris down the inside at Turn 1 on lap 18. Leclerc’s move allowed the Ferrari to spring ahead as Russell maintained a firm three‑second margin.
Antonelli fought valiantly for fourth, keeping a shoulder to Norris but ultimately finishing 0.4 seconds behind the McLaren. Oscar Piastri, unable to match the pace of his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen, slipped to fifth, trailing Verstappen by 0.3 seconds. Lewis Hamilton’s drive ended in seventh, while Pierre Gasly rounded out the points in eighth.
Finish order and implications
Russell crossed the line 1.4 seconds ahead of Leclerc, the Ferrari driver finishing on his third sprint podium of 2026. The order was:
- George Russell – Mercedes – 1st (1.4 s ahead of Leclerc)
- Lando Norris – McLaren – 2nd
- Charles Leclerc – Ferrari – 3rd
- Kimi Antonelli – Mercedes – 4th (0.4 s behind Norris)
- Oscar Piastri – Red Bull – 5th
- Max Verstappen – Red Bull – 6th (0.3 s after Piastri)
- Lewis Hamilton – Mercedes – 7th
- Pierre Gasly – Alpine – 8th
