George Russell said the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix will remain in his memory until his deathbed.
Russell dismisses ‘owed win’ claim at Spa
During a chat on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, the 28‑year‑old confirmed he doesn’t feel the track owes him anything, despite the 2022 drama when his Mercedes finished first but was stripped of the result for being underweight.
That incident handed the win to Lewis Hamilton, who crossed the line in second place and inherited the victory on the road. Russell admitted the race still haunts him, adding that he’ll likely recall it “more” on his deathbed.
He clarified that, “I wasn’t in a championship fight that year. It was a shame not to keep the trophy. But it was a great race and a track I love.”
Championship context heading for Spa
Looking ahead to the 10th round at Spa‑Francorchamps, Russell sits second in the drivers’ standings with 154 points, trailing teammate Kimi Antonelli by 25 and ahead of Lewis Hamilton by seven.
“It’s going to be difficult this year, with the energy management and many challenges,” Russell said, echoing Andrew Shovlin’s remarks on the track’s demands. The Belgian Grand Prix will take place from 17‑19 July.
