Montoya Blasts Russell’s Over‑analysis, Praises Antonelli’s Instinct
“Kimi Antonelli drives naturally, while George Russell tries to over‑analyse every move,” Juan Pablo Montoya accused during the F1 TV Weekend Warm‑Up at the Spanish Grand Prix.
After a 1‑2 sprint to Valencia, Mercedes’s Italian win highlighted Antonelli’s form. Despite starting 19th, the Spanish driver captured the top podium spot, then led the championship by 66 points. Montoya noted, “His wrongs end up being right,” underscoring the driver’s almost instinctive ability.
Tyre Insight: Medium Compound Stays Strong
Montoya added that the medium tyres offered unexpected resilience at the Madriz circuit. “They were a little better than expected on speed, and there was no noticeable degradation as they aged,” he observed.
He urged Russell to adopt a bolder approach: “George needs to understand the tyre strategy, perhaps be a little more aggressive and keep pushing. He has the data, the team, and the information. It’s a lesson to elevate his execution.”
Driving About Driving: Antonelli vs. Russell
Montoya described Antonelli’s approach: “He gasps through the gravel, the car keeps sliding, and he never seems to get it wrong.” Contrast that with Russell’s meticulous style: “He wants to do everything so right, which can stall his rhythm.”
The former F1 star hinted that Antonelli’s effortless mastery “shows how hard it is to beat a driver who does not make mistakes,” pointing to the clear gap in the current duel.
Montoya’s comments arrive as the duo enters Madrid for the season‑opening Spanish Grand Prix, leaving the championship battle tightening around the dominant Mercedes pair.
