George Russell Recounts Zhou Guanyu’s Horrific First‑Lap Crash at the 2022 British GP

George Russell recalls Zhou Guanyu's terrifying first-lap crash at 2022 British GP

George Russell recounted the terrifying first‑lap collision at Silverstone, where his hard‑tires start unraveled into a crash that left Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu upside‑down.

A Home Race Turned Tragedy

Preparing for his inaugural British Grand Prix as a Mercedes driver, Russell felt hopeful on a front‑court deck. The race began with him alone on hard tyres, his wheel spins soon abandoned as the field exploded forward. The momentum knocked him into Zhou Guanyu and Pierre Gasly, a contact that sent the Chinese driver spinning and cartwheeling into gravel before flipping.

The Collision Detail

The wreck was violent enough that Zhou’s Alfa Romeo became lodged between the tyre wall and catch fencing, a scene Russell described as the most horrifying he had ever seen from the cockpit. His own car suffered damage that prevented a restart, yet he abandoned the track and sprinted to Zhou’s side.

Aftermath and Rules

Russell returned to the empty Mercedes, unable to restart the engine. He directed marshals to leave the car untouched as he sought assistance, but his retreat ended with the vehicle on the back of a flatbed recovery truck. Because an external crew had worked on the car, the regulations declared him excluded from the race. The event also led to no major injuries for Zhou, who later returned to competition that season.

Driver Reflections

Recalling the hard‑tyre start, Russell said, “I was the only driver with the hard tyre, came off the line, wheels spinning, all the drivers zooming by me…I hit Zhou, and the next thing he’s spinning around and cartwheeling through the gravel.” He acknowledged the split decision to aid Zhou, noting the instinctive drive was equal to “life or death” in that instant, and that he “couldn’t imagine what he must have felt.”
