Massimo Rivola, president of Aprilia Racing, blunted his earlier harsh words toward rider Jorge Martin after the Hungarian Grand Prix crash and now urges the team to protect Martin as it did for Marco Bezzecchi.
Rivola’s Initial Kritik After the Budapest Incident
Following the opening‑lap pile‑up at Hungaroring that involved Martin, teammate Marco Bezzecchi and other riders, Rivola publicly rebuked Martin, labeling the onset of the collision an “unacceptable” act for a champion.
The Italian producer added that the double‑lap penalty handed to Martin seemed too lenient, implying a harsher sentence would have been fit for someone of his stature.
Shift in Tone After Bezzecchi’s Marshal Incident
Only weeks later, Bezzecchi was excluded from the Sunday race after striking a marshal twice when the official’s test horn inadvertently revved his engine. In his comments, Rivola condemned Bezzecchi while also justifying the appeal for a penalty he saw as excessive.
Rivola’s varied stance highlighted an apparent inconsistency: he protected Bezzecchi fiercely yet earlier had demanded a tougher sanction for Martin.
Martin Calls for Equitable Support
Rivola’s reversal came as Martin requested that the team defend him as consistently as it defended Bezzecchi. He said that a moment of anger “could happen to me too,” recalling a prior altercation with Aprilia manager Paolo Bonora.
“After the over‑penalty for Bezzecchi, I’ve seen how the team stands by him. If a similar situation ever involved me, I expect the same vigor of support,” Martin asserted, underscoring the need for fairness.
Corporate Image and Rider Accountability at Stake
The scenario places Aprilia’s reputation for rider protection against its own disciplinary standards. Rivola’s statements evoke a debate over whether the company’s actions align with the principle that all drivers should receive equal backing regardless of the offense.
As the 2024 season continues, the press remains keen on how Aprilia’s leadership will reconcile these conflicting narratives while preserving both sporting integrity and brand coherence.
