Former Haas owner Guenther Steiner claims George Russell is already eyeing options beyond Mercedes, with Audi flagged as a viable 2028 seat.
Russell’s Rising Decision‑Making
The 29‑year‑old’s future at Brackley has become hotly debated after teammate Kimi Antonelli’s surge to the front of the championship. Antonelli now leads with 219 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton at 169 and Russell at 160.
Steiner noted that internal rivalries—particularly Russell’s clashes with Antonelli and the buzz linking Max Verstappen to Mercedes—might push him to explore alternatives.
Audi’s Ascendant Platform
Audi seized full control of Sauber in 2026, installing Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley at the helm. The brand has been refining its power unit since 2022 and enjoys the backing of the Volkswagen Group, which supplies both capital and technical expertise.
“Audi is making good progress and has a clear trajectory,” Steiner said. “There’s a lot of interest from drivers looking for a 2028 seat, especially for someone in Russell’s position.”
Mercedes Sticks With Current Line‑up
Toto Wolff has confirmed a 2027 commitment to his two‑car formation while Russell has publicly reaffirmed loyalty to the team.
Nevertheless, Steiner suggested that a works Audi contract could offer Russell ownership of a project, rather than a throne he must currently defend.
