A wet race presents the toughest unknown for the 2026 Formula 1 chassis, the Mercedes team‑mate George Russell cautioned after his second‑place finish at Britain.
Russell, who suffered a puncture yet clawed back through a late safety‑car, said nothing can prepare a driver for unexpected wet conditions. According to him, tyre behaviour this year may differ from past seasons, forcing drivers onto more measured out‑laps and first‑turn approach.
“You cannot plan for it because you do not know what the beast is beneath you,” he told the Nu Silver Arrows radio show. He warned that even the iconic Eau Rouge crest could feel unfamiliar on a first push lap in rain.
During the interview, Russell echoed comments from Mercedes deputy chief Pedro de La Rosa that “no two laps in the rain are the same”, stressing the need for flexibility once the car dons the wet set‑up.
With the championship drive to the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa‑Francorchamps from 17‑19 July, the volatility of the circuit only heightens the challenge. Russell stands second in points, 25 behind leader Kimi Antonelli, and will need to navigate the Sud’West dry‑wet transition etc.
