Golden Axed, the canceled reboot of Golden Ax, is coming to PC for a limited time

Sega will allow us to test a level of the prototype canceled on October 18 for its 60th anniversary. A probe balloon to resurrect the saga?

A few years ago, Sega considered bringing back some of its most iconic sagas such as Altered Beast, Shinobi, Streets of Rage and of course, Golden Ax. Although there were returns that came to fruition, such as the exceptional Streets of Rage 4, most of them fell on deaf ears. However, coinciding with its 60th anniversary, the company of the blue hedgehog wants to remove from the trunk of memories one of those who was lost in limbo. This is the reboot of Golden Ax, which was called Golden Axed and was being developed by Sega Studios Australia until 2013, when that headquarters closed its doors. The developer will let us test a level of that canceled prototype “as a special way of thanking the fans.” It will be available on Steam on October 18, but stay tuned because it can only be downloaded for 24 hours.

“It can be wacky, it can be buggy and perhaps an artifact of its time, but it offers a unique insight into what the project could have been and a rare behind-the-scenes look at what can sometimes be the tumultuous world of game development. ”Explains Sega herself on the game’s Steam page. “We’ve reached out to some of the original development team members to bring this dusty gem to light, and they are proud that this project can somehow be revived to share with fans.” Who knows. Will the company be launching a probe balloon to see what reception the return of the saga would have?

More surprises for Sega’s 60th anniversary

Whether it is or not, this is just one of the many moves Sega has in mind to celebrate its 60th birthday. As part of the festivities, the company will also publish on Steam (and only for a few days) titles as special as Streets of Kamurocho, the mix of Streets of Rage 2 and the Yakuza saga (available from October 17 to 19); Armor of Heroes, a retro version of Company of Heroes (15-19); and Endless Zone, a tribute to Fantasy Zone (to be downloaded between October 16 and 19). And if all that were not enough, the developer is giving away a copy of NiGTHS Into Dream for PC to all those who link their Steam account on the 60th anniversary website. Congratulations, Sega!
