Honda has confirmed the signing of Fabio Quartararo for its factory team, locking in the 2021 MotoGP champion through the end of the 2028 season.
Contract Details and Timing
The two‑year deal finalised in January was kept quiet until the latter half of the year, as manufacturers were bound by the newly named Brno Agreement, which sets the commercial and sporting framework for the next five years. Honda announced the rider shift in the middle of the off‑season, aligning with its own corporate schedule.
Quartararo will compete with the Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) factory squad in the 850cc era that starts in 2027.
Quarterback of the RC213V
Christian Pupulin will assume the role of crew chief, a move aimed at rapid assimilation of Quartararo to the RC213V platform. HRC noted the appointment during its statement, while no comments from Quartararo have yet appeared, as he remains under contract with Yamaha.
Career Highlights and Yamaha Exit
With a 2021 world title, 11 wins, 32 podiums, and 21 pole positions, the Frenchman came into Honda with an impressive résumé. The rider will leave Yamaha after eight seasons, a stint that began when Yamaha introduced him in 2019 with its satellite Sepang Racing Team and saw his rise to the factory squad for the 2021 championship.
Despite Yamaha’s gradual decline and limited progress toward the impending 2027 technical changes, Quartararo chose Honda following an internal review of development opportunities.
Team Dynamics and Other Slots
Honda’s other factory seat has attracted Colombian David Alonso, who will compete alongside Italian rider Diogo Moreira. The rider not selected will likely ride for LCR Honda in 2027.
Implications for 850cc Era
Quartararo’s arrival precedes the shift to the new 850cc rules, marking a new chapter for Honda’s MotoGP ambitions. The partnership brings experience, a proven track record, and a fresh dynamic to the HRC program as the sport moves into a new technical landscape.
