Ilari Kuittinen, the founding mind behind Housemarque, has officially stepped down after three decades shaping the studio’s portfolio and culture.
Leadership Transition at Housemarque
In advance of the announcement, Kuittinen quietly mentored Sami “Haxu” Hakala, who will assume the Managing Director role. The goal is to preserve operational stability and carry forward the studio’s creative momentum.
Housemarque’s Milestone Catalog
Under Kuittinen’s guidance Housemarque delivered a string of acclaimed titles, from arcade staples such as Supreme Snowboarding, Super Stardust HD, and Resogun to three‑dimensional sensations like Returnal and the recent Saros. These games positioned the studio as a respected AAA developer while maintaining a distinct Nordic aesthetic.
Housemarque Joins PlayStation Studios
In 2021, Housemarque became part of the PlayStation Studios family, a move spurred by the commercial success of Returnal and its standing as a top PlayStation Plus title. The partnership expanded the studio’s resources without sacrificing its indie‑style creative autonomy.
Kuittinen’s Next Chapter
Having dedicated 33 years to the industry, Kuittinen will take a break from daily operations but intends to remain a fixture at trade events, game showcases, and award ceremonies, including The Game Awards. He has also hinted at offering mentoring or consulting expertise to emerging developers.
