In MotoGP development, riders’ feedback remains the single most decisive factor that engineers translate into chassis upgrades, says former Tech3 manager Nicolas Goyon.
Rider Feedback: A Critical Loop in MotoGP Development
Joan Mir explains that while riders aim to go faster, they are not responsible for solving engineering problems. “We can describe how the bike feels, but we’re not the ones who create the design,” he notes, emphasizing that engineering teams shoulder the creation of upgrades.
Goyon agrees, outlining that engineers generate the options while riders choose the package that best matches their riding style. “The rider’s job is to pick the right parts, but the creative leap comes from our side,” he says, highlighting the symbiotic relationship.
Case in Point: Joan Mir and Engineering Collaboration
Mir describes giving tangible requests—such as “more rear weight” or “a shorter swingarm”—without specifying the exact solution. “We tell them what works; we don’t tell them how to make it,” he claims. His feedback has guided multiple upgrade iterations at both Suzuki and Honda.
Goyon cites Rossi’s 2004 championship as a demonstration that a superb rider can unlock a competent package rather than fundamentally redesign it. “Rossi rode a bike that was already sound; his choice of parts tipped the scale,” he explains.
Historical Cue: Rossi, Pedrosa and the Balance of Talent and Tuning
Pedrosa’s tenure at Honda is often credited for the team’s sustained success. Goyon points out that Pedrosa’s high technical sensitivity enabled him to discover optimal settings, whereas Marquez—despite his natural speed—couldn’t compensate for a deteriorating platform after Pedrosa’s departure.
In contrast, Dovizioso is lauded for delivering precise feedback that helped shape Ducati’s rise. “His detail-oriented approach gave Ducati the direction it needed,” Goyon states, underscoring the importance of sensitivity over sheer pace.
Road to 2027: New Rules and the Rider’s Compass
With the 2027 technical changes—smaller 850cc engines, reduced aerodynamics, removal of ride‑height devices, and a switch to Pirelli tyres—engineers rely heavily on rider impressions. “A rider who’s never handled the new tyres must be exceptionally clear in what he feels,” March De Luca says.
Simulations will remain essential, yet they cannot quantify a bike’s handling feel. Goyon stresses that the rider is the final arbiter: “Without rider feedback, we risk building a bike that is theoretically faster but practically unmanageable.”
The 2027 overhaul will demand a closer blend of data analysis and rider insight, ensuring that each new MotoGP machine can translate technical advances into competitive performance on the track.
