Hyundai Holds Off WRC Decision as Rally2 Model Development Moves Forward

Hyundai yet to make call on WRC future as new Rally2 car development continues

Hyundai WRC future beyond 2026 remains uncertain as the Korean marque accelerates development of a new Rally2 car.

New i20 Rally2 Takes Center Stage

Hyundai is racing ahead with the i20 N Rally2, a platform that will comply with the 2027 Rally2 regulations. The first prototype is already in assembly, setting the stage for a testing program that will begin soon.

Team director Andrew Wheatley confirmed that the powertrain may be reused should the automaker decide to build a WRC27‑spec car in 2029. Development is underway with a dedicated engineering squad and a diverse driver pool, including the five contracted drivers of the current season.

FIA Upgrade Kit Opens New Possibilities

The FIA has introduced an upgrade kit for Rally2 cars that features new bodywork and a 10‑kilogram weight reduction. Only M‑Sport‑Ford has announced a formal commitment to the kit, leaving other teams, including Hyundai, to evaluate the potential gains.

Hyundai is studying how the kit will fit into the future sporting regulations. The WRC Commission meeting is scheduled soon, after which the company will reassess its long‑term strategy.

Three Paths Ahead for Hyundai

Hyundai faces three strategic options: keep the factory‑supported i20 N Rally2 line running, supply the car to private teams, or exit the championship entirely. The decision hinges on the final 2027 sporting format and the associated technical requirements.

Spokesman Andrew Wheatley said discussions with the WRC promoter are ongoing. He added that, “We are still a couple of steps away from knowing where we can dovetail in the WRC.”

Spokesperson Insight and Future Outlook

Wheatley stressed that the company remains committed to developing the Rally2 car, describing the effort as “looking really positive” and pointing out that the vehicle is designed to compete globally in international, regional, and national championships.

The final decision will depend on the outcome of the upcoming regulatory review, as Hyundai weighs its short‑, medium‑ and long‑term objectives.
