Industry Joins #PlayApartTogether Initiative Against Coronavirus

Large companies in the sector agree to report on messages from the World Health Organization through video games.

Riot Games, Activision Blizzard or Unity are some of the 18 companies that have decided to support the #PlayApartTogether campaign. The coronavirus (COVID-19) has been wreaking havoc in many countries around the world for weeks, so governments have taken confinement measures with the aim of reducing the rate of infections. In this situation, information is essential, as well as compliance with laws and the recommendations of health authorities.

This initiative tries to channel WHO messages through its channels, which includes social distancing measures, as well as other preventive actions such as personal hygiene. Washing hands is often one of the most efficient ways to prevent transmission of COVID-19. The idea is that under the umbrella of #PlayApartTogether special events, activities and rewards are held.

"Ensuring that people connect with each other securely has never been more important than now," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision-Blizzard. "Video games are the perfect platform because they connect people through fun. We are proud to participate in such a necessary initiative. โ€ Other companies that support this campaign are Kabam, Snap Games, Amazon Appstore, Maysalward. Twitch, Big Fish Games, Playtika ,, Dirtybit, Pocket Gems, Wooga, Glu Mobile, YouTube Gaming, Jam City, SciPlay and Zynga.

Game delays due to coronavirus?

If we look to the horizon, there are two great titles that will see the light in the coming weeks. One of them is Resident Evil 3 Remake, Capcom's new survival horror. In fact, the Japanese company has already explained that physical copies could be delayed, although the release date remains unchanged. Similar is the case of Final Fantasy VII Remake, which also issued a similar public statement. All in all, Square Enix has reported that the units will be shipped in advance, so physical copies may be received before the official launch.

The coronavirus has notably affected the video game industry, which has been forced to implement teleworking. In Spain, AEVI sent the Government a package of measures that they consider convenient to mitigate the economic effects of the crisis.
