IndyCar introduces a new driver qualification scheme effective 2027
IndyCar has announced a streamlined driver progression framework that opens the series to talent from 2027 onward, outlining clear paths from Indy NXT by Firestone and establishing formal criteria for foreign entrants.
Indy NXT by Firestone standards
Competitors must log a minimum of 12 race starts; results before the twelfth start count retroactively once that milestone is reached.
A single Indy NXT victory is enough for Evaluation Eligible status, while two wins, a championship, or a top‑three finish grants Competitively Qualified status. All other outcomes require a Resume Review before eligibility is set.
Licensing, international access and oval requirements
Both Competitively Qualified and Evaluation Eligible classifications hold for 24 months, pending IndyCar’s competency, safety, medical and administrative checks for a full competition license.
Drivers from Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula E, Super Formula, IMSA GTP, NASCAR Cup and WEC Hypercar may enter via direct resume approval or by undergoing additional evaluation. Oval testing remains compulsory, and the Indianapolis 500 Rookie Orientation and Refresher Program stay in effect.
These standards will be codified in an updated rulebook, providing a reproducible, objective route to IndyCar competition.
