Williams’ team principal James Vowles has admitted that the squad’s remaining 2026 upgrades will fall short of securing regular points.
Shackled by an overweight car that arrived at Bahrain pre‑season testing, the Grove outfit has collected only 11 points across 14 Grands‑Prix. The error‑laden winter build continues to bloat the team’s development curve this year.
Vowles on the Road Ahead
Speaking on the “Fast And The Curious” podcast, Vowles warned that the missteps made in the early design stages will persist until season’s end. “It’s been a tough year, and it will continue to be a tough year to the end,” he said. “There’s just no two ways about it. The mistakes from the winter period remain with us all the way until the end of this year. We’re focused on getting back to the top of the field by the time the next‑year car rolls out.”
He added that the incremental upgrades for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will not be enough to push the team up to the points‑scoring threshold. “There’ll be small steps this year, but they won’t match what I’d like to see—scoring points for a weekend,” Vowles insisted.
Current Standing and Immediate Expectations
Williams occupies ninth in the Constructors’ standings, sitting only behind Aston Martin and Cadillac. The upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix will run from 24‑26 September on the Baku City Circuit, and the team hopes the fresh parts will help climb the grid.
“Do I think we’ll move forward on the grid next year?” Vowles confirmed. “Yes. It’s hard to move backwards on the grid. We’ll move forward as a result of it, though it will still be a tough slog.”
