Jorge Martín has confirmed he will join Yamaha for the 2027 MotoGP season after a controversial switch to Aprilia that began in 2024.
Strategic Pivot to Yamaha
Martin’s announcement comes as Yamaha, last season’s title‑winning champion with Fabio Quartararo, has stalled under a new V4 engine and the looming introduction of the 850cc rule cycle. The French factory’s performance has dipped since 2021, leaving the team trailing the front‑running objects in the standings.
“I’ve always made decisions with what was best for me and my family in mind,” Martín said to DAZN, adding, “This is the right one.” He remains unfazed by critics who cited his brief stint with Aprilia as a mistake.
Aprilia’s Rise and Martín’s Role
After signing a two‑year contract with Aprilia midway through his 2024 title year, Martín left Ducati’s factory squad, which had overlooked him for promotion. Aprilia—once only securing an accidental podium in the Americas Grand Prix—has accelerated swiftly, now challenging Ducati for the championship in 2026.
“I trust Fabiano (Sterallacchini) wholeheartedly,” he explained, highlighting the technical director’s commitment to improve him. Martín detailed a meeting in Andorra where Fabiano pledged to “bring back that Jorge from 2024” and describe how that support has rekindled his performance after a 2025 season marred by injuries.
Despite a period of legal tension when Martín attempted to exit his contract while recovering from early‑season injuries, both sides reported the relationship was “back on track.” He emphasized the clarity of each party’s goals and the importance of teamwork, citing meals and short trips together as indications of the renewed harmony.
Future Uncertainty and Competitive Landscape
Martin will leave Aprilia at the end of the year, a move that places the company’s long‑term prospects with rider Marco Bezzecchi. As MotoGP edges toward the end‑of‑century generation, Yamaha’s decision to bring Martín on board signals a bold effort to regain elite standings amid a shifting competitive order.
